Gender Research and Data Specialist Internship | UN Women, Seoul, Republic of Korea

The Gender Research and Data Specialist at UN Women in Seoul, Republic of Korea, plays a crucial role in advancing gender equality through research and data analysis. This position focuses on gathering, analyzing, and interpreting gender-related data to inform policies and strategies that promote women’s empowerment and gender justice. The specialist collaborates with various stakeholders to ensure data-driven decision-making and the integration of gender perspectives in development programs across the region.

Key Functions and Accountabilities:

  1. Research, Data, and Policy Analysis
    • Lead research and data analysis for gender equality and women’s empowerment in collaboration with UN Women HQ, regional, and country offices.
    • Design and manage the Centre’s research and data plans, ensuring coordination across UN Women teams.
    • Conduct research and policy analysis, focusing on Asia-Pacific, and stay updated on emerging issues.
    • Ensure quality assurance for research products and manage budgets for statistics and data plans.
  2. Capacity Building Support
    • Develop and implement a training plan on gender statistics, supporting national governments and target audiences.
    • Provide technical support for training on gender data and statistics, and develop relevant materials.
  3. Strategic Partnerships
    • Build alliances with stakeholders and development partners for gender equality programs.
    • Co-lead expert groups and networks, including on Technology-Facilitated Violence Against Women.
  4. Knowledge Management
    • Share lessons learned and good practices in research and data across UN Women offices.
    • Facilitate internal knowledge exchange within UN Women.
  5. Other Duties
    • Perform additional responsibilities to ensure efficient office functioning.

Recruitment Qualifications for Gender Research and Data Specialist Internship 

Education and certification:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, social sciences, gender/women’s studies, international development, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A project/programme management certification would be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible work experience at the national or international level in design, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of research and data, ideally with some experience in developing countries.
  • Experience with the production of gender statistics, social statistics and intersectional statistics, including official statistics and in line with international statistical standards. Professional experience analyzing micro data, conducting research and drafting analytical publications.
  • Mastery of STATA, R or related statistical package through syntax writing.
  • Experience coordinating and liaising with government agencies, research or statistical institutions and/or donors is an asset.
  • Experience working in the UN System is an asset.
  • Experience working in Asia and the Pacific region is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of the local language (Korean) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
