The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia calls applications for Governance Affairs Internship in Beirut, Lebanon. The intern reports directly to the Chief, Democratic Transition and State-building Section and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of the Subprogramme. The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis – this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months.
Responsibilities
In particular, the intern will be responsible for carrying out, but not limited to, the following tasks
- Conducting research and reference searches on issues relating to the Subprogramme’s areas of work;
- Assisting in compiling, processing and working with Governance databases derived from a variety of sources.
- Similarly, assisting in the construction of Governance and reform indicators.
- Doing surveys and preparing reports on the reform policies undertaken by countries afflicted by political transition and/or conflict.
- Also, assisting in preparing charts and tables and drafting content for inclusion in the outputs of the Subprogramme.
- Furthermore, performing other duties as assigned.
Required Education
To qualify for this governance affairs internship, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Enrollment in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Enrollment in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Must have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
Skills and Experience
- Computer literate in standard software applications, in particular Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
- Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
- Moreover, applicants are not necessary to have professional work experience for participation in the internship program.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is necessary for this position. In addition to that, knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
