The United Nations Environment Program invites students to undertake internship placement on Ecosystem Management in Panama City, Panama. Latin America and the Caribbean Office in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region – including 16 small islands developing States, with a population of about 588 million people. Moreover, the office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

Responsibilities 

The intern for this Internship at the United Nations Environment Program, Panama will be liable for the following duties

  • Supporting the Ecosystems Management sub-program.
  • Enabling activities that increase the understanding of the values of ecosystem services for productive sectors and engage these sectors to improve protected areas management.
  • Engaging with the Regional Cooperation Programme for Biodiversity, supporting the activities and actions proposed.
  • Also, supporting the various initiatives related to Oceans, including related to Blue Economy, Marine Litter and microplastics initiatives as well as the Integrated Coastal Zone Management.
  • Developing infographics using regional data that can be useful for the various projects and thematic areas in the subprogram.
  • Conducting secondary data research to support the development of concept notes, proposals or policy briefs.
  • Assisting the preparation of communications pieces, technical briefing notes, news pieces, presentations, translations, draft reports and publications as necessary.
  • Supporting the start-up phase of any projects if required. Similarly, might also assist in the organization of meetings, training, and workshops.
  • Furthermore, performing other activities as requested.

Requirements 

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Candidate must be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and also should have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • The ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Must be pursuing education in Biodiversity, Conservation, Environmental Management, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Economics preferred, or other relevant fields of study.
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the program.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Spanish are necessary for this position since work will require research and communication, including reading and interviews, in both languages. In addition to that, working knowledge of French is desirable.
