The Human Development Report Office of UNDP calls candidates to participate in an internship program in New York, United States of America. The mission of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) is to advance human development. In addition to that, HDRO works with others to achieve change through writing and research, data analysis and presentation, and outreach and advocacy work.

Propose of Internship 

The internship is to provide the intern with the opportunity to learn about the Human Development approach and current international development issues. The aim of this internship is to also investigate and learn about different sources of data that are useful for the work of the office. In particular, the intern will be able to contribute through research and data analysis to the Human Development Report 2020. The intern will work under the overall supervision of Chief of Statistics or a senior member of the Research team (depending on the main area of work) and will collaborate closely with the team on the preparation of the Human Development Report 2020.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Providing assistance for quantitative and qualitative background research for the report.
  • Undertaking literature reviews as well as writing short research notes.
  • Doing review and verification of statistical materials for the report.
  • Supporting the team in the analysis and presentation of human development statistics.
  • Assisting in the identification of data sources and preparation of datasets. Similarly, assisting in fact-checking and proofreading.
  • Furthermore, supporting other activities as requested, including providing logistical support to various events organized by HDRO such as consultations, workshops, and side events.

Requirements 

Candidates must have the following qualifications in order to be eligible for this Internship in UNDP Office of United States

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. Program in the environment and sustainable science, economics, statistics, or social sciences.
  • Experience with and knowledge of Excel, Stata, R, and Python.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. In addition to that, competency in other UN languages is a strong asset.
  • Previous experience in research and policy development is an asset. Similarly, familiarity with the Human Development concept is an asset.

  • Proven research and writing skills, with track records in producing development research.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to learning.
  • Commitment to UNDP vision, mission and values and knowledge of the UN work environment an advantage.
  • Furthermore, strong service and team-work orientation, cultural sensitivity and ability to work in a fast-paced multinational environment.

Stipend/Funding

The intern will be eligible for a stipend (up to the maximum amount of US$1,000) if s/he does not receives any sort of funding. The purpose of the stipend is to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station.
