COMM is ESO’s vibrant Audiovisual Communication Internship department, composed of more than 20 professionals with expertise in astronomy, science communication, image and video production, design, publishing, web and social media, and event organization. The team is responsible for both internal and external communication, aiming to increase awareness and engagement with ESO’s work in astronomy. Content is shared through various platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, in English and Spanish to reach both international and Chilean audiences.

Location: ESO Offices, Vitacura, Santiago (with possible travel to observing sites in Antofagasta and Coquimbo)

Duration: 3–6 months

Start Date: Flexible

Key Competencies and Experience

  • Essential:
    • Strong skills in filming and editing video content
    • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.)
    • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Interest in science communication
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment
    • Creative, proactive, organized, and able to meet deadlines
    • Valid driver’s license
  • Desirable:
    • Graphic design skills for social media content creation
  • Qualifications
    • Degree in Communication, ideally with a focus on Audiovisual Communication
    • Alternatively, current enrollment in a relevant university program
  • Language Requirements
    • Fluency in Spanish and English, both written and spoken

Duties and Responsibilities of Audiovisual Communication Internship

  • The selected candidate will produce engaging audiovisual content to support various communication activities. The audiovisual material will be aligned with ESO’s social media and creative content strategies and guided by the Organisation’s visual identity.
  • The main tasks and objectives are:
  • Development of audio-visual materials for campaigns around the milestones of the ELT construction and other ESO activities in Chile, with focus on the regions that host its observatories.
  • Develop short videos for campaigns and events, from script writing, transcriptions, reviewing to filming and editing in different formats and channels (social media, YouTube, etc).
  • Coordinate, film and edit interviews with ESO staff for campaigns and events.
  • Attend team meetings and coordinate content production and strategy execution with the team.
  • Support the communication team in Chile with project development related to social media, media and outreach strategies.
