Leo Baeck Fellowship 2025: Free Scholarship in Germany

The Leo Baeck Fellowship 2025 provides an exceptional, fully funded opportunity for doctoral candidates dedicated to studying the history and culture of Central European Judaism. This prestigious program offers a monthly stipend of €1,550, with an additional €100 each month for research purposes. This financial support enables international students to focus fully on their academic work.

Open to doctoral researchers, the Leo Baeck Fellowship 2025 welcomes projects from various disciplines, including literature, philosophy, history, and musicology. Research topics may span different periods and locations, such as Europe, America, and Israel, as long as they connect to German-speaking Judaism. This unique fellowship offers a valuable platform for advancing knowledge in this field.

Coverage of Leo Baeck Fellowship 2025

The Fellowship program provides the recipient with the following benefits:

  • Fellows receive a stipend of 1,550 € a month.
  • In addition, a monthly research allowance of 100 € is available.
  • Fellows can also apply for supplements for health insurance (max. 100 €/month) and childcare, as well as travel allowances, to support research tips and participation at conferences abroad.
  • Contributions to tuition fees outside Germany may also be granted (max. 10,000 €).
  • All funding follows the general rules set by the German Federal Ministry for  Education and Research (BMBF).

 Eligibility Criteria

the candidate must fulfil all of the following requirements below:

  • Required Language: English/German
  • Eligible Countries: All world countries.
  • University degree(s) with outstanding marks
  • Date of latest degree not before March 2020
  • Formal qualification for doctoral studies/acceptance on a doctoral programme at a recognised university
  • Research project focussing on the history and culture of Central European Jewry.

Application requirements

  • A significantly above-average university degree
  • Obtaining the last university degree not before March 2020
  • Admission to the doctorate has been granted
  • A doctoral project in the field of German-Jewish history and culture

It is not possible to apply for a regular doctoral scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation at the same time.

The application deadline for the 2024/25 academic year is March 1, 2024.
