Microsoft announces a research internship for Topological Machine Learning. Microsoft Research provides a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers. Our researchers and engineers pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines, to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.
S-Z will apply machine learning to a suite of topological problems grounded in the old, and still formidable, the problem of giving an efficient algorithm to unknot a loop of string which is not actually knotted. Building on this foundation he will establish a framework for the empirical study of the problem of giving a knot or link a “ribbon structure” and related structures (symmetric ribbon and slice.) A more distant target toward which he will do some foundational work: Use modern computational resources and if applicable AI to look at the venerable problem if the 4-dimensional topology of understanding the double point structure of immersed disks in manifolds called “capped gropes”. This problem has significant mathematic implications and will benefit from techniques developed in the earlier stages of the project
In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. After you submit your application, Microsoft may send a request for letters to your list of references on your behalf. Note, Microsoft will only request the reference letters after submitting your application. Furthermore, there might not be an automatic request for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.
