Key Duties and Responsibilities for UNDP Projects Coordinator

  • Project Management: Oversee day-to-day implementation of projects in line with UNDP policies and project documents; develop work plans, manage budgets, and ensure timely delivery of results.

  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Track project progress, manage risks, ensure compliance with M&E plans, and prepare regular progress and financial reports. Lead on project closure and evaluations.

  • Stakeholder Coordination: Engage with national counterparts, project boards, donors (including the Embassy of Japan), and other partners to ensure effective collaboration, alignment, and communication.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Document and share lessons learned, success stories, and best practices. Organize knowledge-sharing sessions and support capacity development.

  • Gender & Inclusion: Ensure gender is integrated across all project activities, outputs, and management processes.

  • Resource Mobilization & Partnerships: Identify new funding opportunities, support pipeline project development, and contribute to strategic advocacy and donor engagement.

  • Additional Support: Perform related tasks, support audits, ensure proper documentation, and contribute to cross-project synergy and innovation.

Institutional Arrangement

The Projects Coordinator will manage the implementation of projects under the Energy and Environment Unit, overseeing technical coordination, resource mobilization, personnel supervision, and reporting. They will ensure results-based management by aligning activities with project indicators and work plans.

The Coordinator will work closely with national partners, including the Ministry of Water and the Ministry of Emergency of Kazakhstan, to build synergies across related initiatives. They will report to the Programme Specialist/Head of the Energy and Environment Unit and serve as the main liaison between UNDP, government bodies, UN agencies, NGOs, and project stakeholders.

Required Skills and Experience of UNDP Projects Coordinator

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Hydrology/Water resource management, Economy, Governance, Natural Sciences, Business Administration, Urban Studies, Environmental Studies, Disaster Risk Reduction, Engineering  or a relevant related field is required, or
  • A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree) in the areas mentioned above with additional 2 years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years (with Master’s degree) or 4 years (with Bachelor’s degree) of working experience in managing/coordinating projects/programs in one of the following fields: sustainable water resource management, environment, economy, urban resilience, disaster risk reduction, climate change, urban/ environmental planning, land use and physical planning.

Required skills:

  • Knowledge of sustainable water resource management, environment, economy, urban resilience, disaster risk reduction, climate change issues in Kazakhstan, including the political, institutional and socio-economic contexts is required.

Desired skills:

  • Additional years of work experience as a manager/coordinator in project implementation and the ability to manage conflicting priorities and tight timelines is desired.
  • Working experience with ministries and/or other national institutions, and ability to work effectively with fellow partners at all levels and with all groups would be an asset.
  • Working experience within the UN system in implementing development projects would be an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English and Kazakh and/or Russian is required.
