The UNICEF International Internship Program in Iraq offers qualified university students a unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF’s work under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.
UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. It has spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Further, it believes all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential to the benefit of a better world.
Iraq faces a unique set of environmental challenges as one of the MENA regions most vulnerable countries to climate change. Demographic growth puts further strain on natural resources that are themselves ever scarcer. Further, the Governments capacity to devise and implement the necessary adaptation and mitigation policies is undermined by a daunting context of post-conflict reconstruction.
Wars and violence have severely damaged Iraq’s water supply and sanitation infrastructure. Further, it has weakened the Governments capacity at all levels to manage WASH services. Also, it has resulted in a lack of access to potable water and basic sanitation facilities. Moreover, MICS6 shows that only 39.2% of the Iraq population have access to water service that meets JMP standard of ‘safely managed’ service and 23.6% have access to ‘safely managed’ sanitation service.
UNICEFs WASH programme is working to support the national priorities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), by enhancing sector capacity to provide quality water and sanitation services for all with the involvement of stakeholders at various levels to ensure social inclusion.
