The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) is a competitive fellowship that is awarded to full-time master’s and PhD students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment. The fellowship is open to students in all fields of study, provided their program is eligible for Tri-Agency funding.

The UMGF is valued at $14,000 per year for master’s students and $18,000 per year for PhD students. The fellowship can be held for up to two years of MSc study and up to four years at the PhD level.

To be eligible for the UMGF, students must have a minimum admission GPA of 3.00 based on their admission to their current graduate program. Students must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or hold a student visa.

  • Have a minimum admission GPA of 3.00 based on your admission to your current graduate program.

Additional eligibility criteria may apply, depending on your department or unit. For example, some departments may require a higher admission GPA than the minimum of 3.00.

Application Procedure for 2024 Fully Funded Scholarship in Canada

  • Review the eligibility requirements. To be eligible for the UMGF, you must:

    • Be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a Master’s or Ph.D. student.
    • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in your most recent undergraduate or graduate degree.
    • Not have an active, admission‐related hold on your student account during your provisional admission period.
    • Be registered full‐time in a graduate program of study in the unit that recommends you for a UMGF, if you hold a UMGF award.

  • Contact your department or unit. Your department or unit will have its own application process and deadline for the UMGF. You should contact your department or unit to learn more about their process and to get the necessary application forms.

  • Submit your application materials. Your application materials will vary depending on your department or unit’s requirements. However, you will typically need to submit the following:

    • A completed application form
    • A copy of your CV
    • A copy of your transcripts
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • A personal statement
  • Be interviewed by your department or unit. Once you have submitted your application materials, your department or unit will review your application and may invite you for an interview.

  • Be recommended by your department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. If your department or unit selects you for a UMGF, they will recommend you to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

  • Be awarded a UMGF by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will review the recommendations from all departments and units and will award UMGFs to the most qualified candidates.
