University of Cape Town invites for Ecology postdoc fellowship program to join a team in South Africa. The fellows must have skills in remote sensing, statistical ecology or plant physiological ecology. Moreover, the fellowship candidate will work to answer “How will changing seasonality affect biodiversity and water provisioning in the Greater Cape Floristic Region?”

The project is funded by the NRF through ACCESS. It is led by Res Altwegg, Vernon Visser and Jasper Slingsby at SEEC (Centre for Statistics in Ecology, the Environment and Conservation) and Adam West at the Department of Biological Sciences at UCT. The postdoc will be based at SEEC within the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Cape Town.
The project consists of multiple parts and postdoc fellow who could work in any one or several of the following parts:

  • Ecological remote sensing of seasonality in the GCFR
  • Seasonality and C4 grass establishment in winter rainfall areas
  • Drought physiology and remote sensing of biodiversity
  • Birds’ responses to seasonality

Value and Tenure

The value of the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is R220,000 per annum. The tenure of the fellowship is one year in the first place. However, in case of necessity a provision of renewal is possible. Renewals will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress.

The fellowship does not include any benefits. The fellowship is compliant with the SARS policies/rules and is therefore exempt from taxation.

Eligibility

  • The fellowship is only available to individuals who have achieved the doctoral degree within the past five years.
  • Applicants may not previously have held any full-time academic or professional posts.
  • The successful candidate must register as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Cape Town.
  • The successful candidate must comply with the university’s approved policies, procedures as well as practices for the postdoctoral sector.
  • NRF needs to approve the successful candidate for the postdoc fellowship.
  • Experience in either remote sensing programming in Python, R or Google Earth Engine, or plant eco-physiological techniques will be a major advantage for this position.

After passing the eligibility, the University of Cape Town will require the following documents from the Ecology Postdoc Fellows:

    • a letter of application,
  • Moreover, a CV, including a list of publications, conference presentations and software expertise,
  • Further, copies of academic transcripts,
  • Likewise, a copy of the relevant thesis (if no publications have emerged from this work yet),
  • Also, names (and contact details) from two academics who have taught, supervised or worked alongside the applicant.

The University prefers applications arriving via email.

Deadline

The University of Cape Town accepts the fellowship applications for candidates pursuing postdoc in Ecology until May 31, 2019. However, the university doesn’t entertain any late fellowship applications for students applying to study in South Africa.
