The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country’s economic, social and research-based growth The program is jointly administered by Canada’s three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). CIHR has been designated as the operational lead for the implementation of the program.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is distinguished from existing postdoctoral fellowships programs by its emphasis on the synergy between an applicant’s individual merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career and the host institution’s commitment to the research program and environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated. As such, an applicant’s application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program must be completed in full collaboration with the proposed host institution.

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to:

  • attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally
  • develop their leadership potential
  • position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow

Benefits

A Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are stipend and not salary. Therefore, it is not eligible for:

  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP);
  • Employment Insurance (EI); or
  • other non-discretionary benefits.

Moreover, Banting Fellowship awards 70 fellows annually. Approximately 140 awards are active at any time. Postdoctoral Fellows eligible for the Banting Fellowship will each receive an amount of  $70,000 per year (taxable). Moreover, the fellowship covers 2 years (non-renewable) tenure period.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Banting Fellowships in Canada:

  • applicants must be either a Canadian citizen or Permanent residents of Canada. Also, foreign citizens are eligible to apply for the Banting fellowships
  • further, applicants must be pursuing research in one of the following areas:
    • Health research
    • Natural sciences and/or engineering
    • Social sciences and/or humanities
  • Also, applicants must apply for a research fellowship in the eligible institutions. Institutions eligible include Canadian and foreign universities, affiliated research hospitals, colleges, and not-for-profit organizations with a strong research mandate and capacity.
  • Also, applicants to the 2019-20 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree:
    • between September 15, 2016, and September 30, 2020 (inclusively), and
    • before the start date of their award.

Organized by the Canadian Government, application for the Fellowship is an online process. Applicants will require to make online registration and submit an online application along with required documents. The documents required to apply for the fellowship include:

  • a Canadian Common CV
  • Likewise, significant research contributions documents
  • Further, Significant leadership contributions documents
  • Moreover, Fulfillment of degree requirements form
  • Identify referees
  • Also, proposal information and supporting documents

Deadline

Applicants may apply for the Banting Fellowships to Research studies in Canada no later than September 18, 2019 (20:00 EDT). Applications arriving postdeadline are not eligible for the fellowship consideration.
