Details

Fully Funded Human Rights Advocates Program is available for application at the Institute for Human Rights Study, Columbia University. The Program is designed for human rights activists working with NGOs on issues including sexual and gender-based violence, minority rights, LGBT rights, labor rights, migration, health, social exclusion, environmental justice, disability rights, and corporate social accountability.

The Institute for Human Rights Study will select the participants on the basis of their previous work experience in human rights, commitment to the human rights field. Further, the participants must also demonstrate the ability to pursue graduate-level studies. Full-time students or government officials are not eligible. However, applicants holding full or part-time jobs pursuing their advocacy efforts are eligible.

Fully Funded Human Rights Advocates Program

After ISHR conducts its stringent selection process, it makes every effort to secure funding for shortlisted Advocates to attend the program. However, in cases ISHR cannot secure funding, shortlisted Advocates may require to secure their own funds.

Who are eligible for the Human Rights Advocates Program?

Candidates for the Human Rights Advocates program must work at the grassroots level. Further, the candidates should meet the criteria set by the IHRS which includes:

  • Advocates must provide proof of institutional endorsement in English from their organizations for their participation in the Program and must commit to returning to that organization upon completion of the Program.
  • One organization may only endorse one applicant. Multiple application from a single organization will result in disqualification of all other applicants from the same organization.
  • Applicants from high-income countries are not eligible.
  • However, those representing marginalized communities may apply for the program.
  • Participants must have Fluency in English.
  • Moreover, the Institute for Human Rights Study prefers candidates who have not previously had opportunities to travel and study internationally.

How to apply for Human Rights Advocates Program?

The Fully funded Human Rights Advocates program is available for online registration. Moreover, the candidates will require to complete the online form in English. Upon submission of the online form, the candidates will receive a confirmation email. Candidates may, however,  edit their application until the deadline.

Further, while making the application, the candidates will also require to add relevant documentation which includes a CV, transcripts and two recommendation letters in English.

Moreover, candidates may also submit the application through postal mail. However, any charges regarding postal mail are the responsibility of the candidates.
