The Mandela Rhodes Foundation invites young African researchers to apply for the fully funded scholarship for the academic session starting in 2021. The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarships programme is a combination of financial support for postgraduate studies as well as a high-quality Leadership Development Programme, with the intention of building exceptional leadership capacity in Africa.

Benefits 

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarships cover tuition for a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters’s degree in any field at a recognized South African institution of higher education. In addition to that, the scholarship will cover the following things

  • Tuition and registration fees as set by the institution as well as a study materials allowance as set by the MRF.
  • Accommodation and meal allowances as set by the MRF.
  • A medical aid allowance as set by the MRF.
  • Economy-class travel allowance for international Scholars only from the Scholar’s home to their institution at the beginning and end of their degree.
  • Furthermore, the successful recipient of the scholarship will receive a personal allowance.

Eligibilities 

The Scholarship is open to citizens of all African countries to postgraduate study at South African universities or tertiary institutions. Candidates must be of between the ages of 19 and 29 and should have a first degree with the marks above the average academic results. Moreover, candidates must have 70% or higher marks to be eligible.

Application 

Interested applicants must apply online for the Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship. They can log onto the applications platform to access the application and upload the necessary documents and essays. The three people who write the recommendation letter must also log onto the platform to upload their letters directly. Applicants must give them plenty of time to write their letters, sign onto the platform, and upload them. Moreover, the application cannot be submitted without the letters and will not be considered.

Selection Criteria

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation looks for young Africans who have demonstrated the potential to embody the founding principles of reconciliation, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Generally, candidates must have already assumed leadership and made an impact on the campus or community.

Conditions 

  • Accept the scholarship for the year that it is offered – it cannot be deferred. In addition to that, they should have secured admission to your university of choice by January of their year in residence.
  • Attend and participate in all activities of the leadership development programme, and travel outside South Africa, even for research purposes, will not be accepted as a reason for absence.
  • Maintain high standards of work and conduct.
  • May not hold other scholarships and funded opportunities. Similarly, may not do paid work for more than 12 hours a week.
  • Furthermore, must uphold the values, principles and standards of the Foundation; if they do not the MRF may cease payments and end the participation in the programme.
