• The applicant must have a PhD or its equivalent at the start of the fellowship.
• Applicants who hold a PhD at the time of application are eligible to apply if they have obtained it within two years from the date of filling out the application.
• The applicant must have at least one accepted work or publication in an international journal which will be reviewed at the time of application.
• All applications must include inter-country mobility, for more information on mobility requirements refer to the EMBO Fellowships Guidelines.
• Applications to go to the country in which the PhD was awarded will not be considered.
• Applications to return to a laboratory where the candidate has worked in the past for more than six months will not be considered, either in one visit or in several visits.
• Applications for an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship to be held at the laboratory, institute, or department in which the candidate worked for the PhD, or to work again with the candidate’s supervisor, will not be considered, regardless of where the latter is located.
• Candidates who have started work in the host laboratory can only apply if they have been working in the host laboratory for less than six months at the time the application is completed.
• Candidates may submit only one application for one project in one host laboratory in each round of the fellowship.
• Only one resubmission is allowed.

Fellowship Duration: EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded for a period of two years. Although shorter periods can be requested, the minimum duration of the fellowship that can be requested is one year, and fellowships must begin within one calendar year of stopping the relevant evaluation.

Selection Criteria for Postdoctoral Fellowships from EMBO

All applications are initially reviewed by the EMBO Fellowships Office to ensure that they are complete and eligible, then all eligible applications are sent to the Fellowships Committee for pre-screening and approximately twice the number of available fellowships are selected for an interview (approximately 30% of applications). During the pre-screening, the committee reviews an abbreviated application form that includes a summary of the applicant’s major scientific achievements along with the top three publications, the concise and biological significance of the proposed work, justification for the selection of the host laboratory, as well as letters of recommendation.

Applicants who have successfully passed the pre-screening will be invited for a personal or video interview and if this is not possible, the candidate’s application for a written assessment will be sent.

All applications are evaluated by the Fellowship Committee based on:

• Previous scientific achievements of the applicant.
• The novelty and biological relevance of the proposed research requests to further explore a topic similar to a PhD project usually receive lower priority for funding.
• Suitability of the host laboratory for the applicant’s proposed research and training.

The result of the selection is usually announced within 14 to 16 weeks of the evaluation deadline on the fellowship website.

Note: Interviews usually take place within 6 to 10 weeks of the assessment deadline. Interviews are conducted remotely via video and candidates may be asked to present a seminar as part of the interview.
