Details

Applications are open for two PhD studentships in the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI), for work in collaboration with the UK Catalysis Hub – a national network of catalytic science in the UK. Several research projects will be available studying the molecular level properties controlling the performance of key catalytic systems. A wide range of techniques will come to use including synthesis, characterization, and testing of catalytic systems, but also, where appropriate, synchrotron and neutron-based experimental methods (employing the UK Diamond synchrotron and ISIS neutron facilities), together with computer modeling.

Research topics will relate to the following catalytic systems:

  • supported nano-metallic catalysts used in a wide range of processes including oxidation, hydrogenation, and C-H activation as well as photo-catalytic reactions
  • microporous catalysts employed in hydrocarbon synthesis, isomerization, and oxidation catalysis
  • metal oxide and carbide catalysts used in CO2 activation.

Moreover, Much of the research relates to environmental remediation, renewable energy, and synthetic fuels. All projects will explore areas of key scientific and industrial importance and also, will train the student in advanced experimental and/or computational techniques.
