This scholarship was instituted in 2010 with funds donated by Dr. Malcolm Tait. Malcolm Tait, an alumnus and Adjunct Professor of the University of Canterbury, has had a distinguished career in music education. Furthermore, he served on the music faculties of the University of Hawaii, Case Western-Reserve University, Ohio, and as Dean of the schools of Music at West Chester University, and East Carolina University. Additionally, his last position was as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs at Georgia Southwestern State University.
Furthermore, if in any year there is no candidate deserving the scholarship, the University will gove no o award. Additionally, the University Council on the recommendation of the Selection Committee shall make this award.
The University of Canterbury in Christchurch is New Zealand’s second-oldest university. It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Its original campus was in the central city, but in 1961 when it became an independent university it also began moving out of its original neo-gothic buildings, which were re-purposed as the Christchurch Arts Centre.
