Details

The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students is open for application to privately-financed international students. Moreover, this scholarship aims at students with excellent academic and character records that are facing financial difficulties. Further, to apply for the scholarship, the students should have received pre-arrival admission in an academic program in Japan. The student may be accepted for graduate or undergraduate studies, junior college, college of technology or specialized course in Japan. The objective of the reservation program is to contribute toward easing their financial concerns about arrival and studies in Japan while promoting pre-arrival admission and improving the level of learning.

Benefits:

The monthly stipend specified for the academic year for which the candidate is to receive the scholarship.
(The monthly stipend for 2019-2020 are 48,000 yen for graduate as well as undergraduate levels. The amount may change from one academic year to another.) Moreover, The scholarship is provided on a monthly basis.
Spring scholarships (enrollment in April): 12 months (From April in the year of selection to next March)
Autumn scholarships (enrollment in September/October): 6 months (From October in the year of selection to next March)

Eligibility:

General-recommendation (graduate level)

The privately-financed international student who plans to enroll as a full-time student in a graduate school in Japan in April (September or October for autumn scholarship) using pre-arrival admission

EJU exam or English courses (Undergraduate level)

The privately-financed international student who plans to enroll as a full-time student in an undergraduate school, junior college, college of technology (3rd year or higher) or specialized course in specialized training college in Japan in April (September or October for autumn scholarship) using pre-arrival admission (or pre-arrival admission based on EJU)

(Note 1) “Full-time student” under this program does not include research students, trainees, non-degree students, advanced course students, special course students, auditing students, and special students among others.
(Note 2) To receive the scholarship, the candidate must complete the procedure specified in (9) Selection of recipients.

Apply through the educational institution you plan to join. Nor do we accept applications directly from students.
Further, Information on reservation categories and universities that can provide recommendation are mentioned below.

  1. General-recommendation (graduate level): Universities offering pre-arrival admission to graduate schools
  2. EJU exam (Undergraduate level): Undergraduate schools registered with JASSO as schools offering pre-arrival admission based on EJU (schools registered as of October 1, 2018, for spring scholarship and schools registered as of April 1, 2019, for autumn scholarship)
  3. English courses (undergraduate level): Schools that have undergraduate courses providing degrees or associate degrees with classes conducted only in English and offering pre-arrival admission for the concerned undergraduate courses.

Selection of Applicants

The Head of the educational institution in which the reserved candidate is enrolled should recommend the candidate based on the 2019 Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students Guidelines or 2019 Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students Guidelines (6-month scholarship). Moreover, recommended candidates from each educational institution will be selected for the scholarship after consultation with the Committee for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students in JASSO.
