Details

Applications call for Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of South Florida in the United States of America. The School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida seeks to fill a Postdoctoral Scholar position to join the seismology group. This is a full-time 12-month position with a starting date expected no later than January 4th, 2021. Initial funding is for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to a total of three years. Health benefits will be offered through the USF Postdoctoral Scholar health insurance program.

Summary

Moreover, the selected candidate will join the seismology group to work on the project “Improving Small Event Characterization and Determination of Moment Tensor Uncertainties.” The Postdoctoral Scholar will work with a large dataset of broadband seismic waveforms from the Middle East. Basically, the research will focus on full seismic moment tensor determination of small-to-moderate sized events with the goal to improve methods that include realistic estimates of moment tensor uncertainties and parameter trade-offs.

Responsibilities

Candidates on this Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of South Florida will have the following qualifications

  • Implementation and modification of moment tensor inversion and 1D and 3D synthetic seismogram calculation codes on High-Performance Computing facilities.
  • Extensive testing and application to synthetic and real datasets. Also, validation of 3D reference Earth models in the target area.
  • The selected candidate will write and publish manuscripts from this research as well as prepare and submit follow-on proposals related to this project.
  • The candidate is also encouraged to develop her/his own research agenda.

Criteria

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited institution and appropriate experience and training within geology, geophysics, or seismology.
  • Candidates must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Postdoctoral Fellow.
  • The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in geophysics/seismology; be a highly motivated, independent researcher; and have experience in seismic moment tensor analysis and/or seismic waveform modeling preferred.

The project is computationally intensive, and part of the analyses will be conducted using the High-Performance Computing facilities at USF and other partner institutions such as the lead collaborator, the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
