The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.  Currently, it is seeking to fill the UN Development System Reform Internship position in the New York office, based in New York City, USA.

What will the UN Development System Reform Intern do at WFP?

The UN Development System reform Intern will work under the general supervision of the Deputy Director in the WFP New York office. Moreover, the intern will assume the following responsibilities:

  • Inter-governmental meetings/General Assembly, Special Sessions, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and other inter-governmental fora; Assist WFP staff members following the assigned UN reform events with all activities related to them; attend preparatory and formal meetings and prepare a timely note on salient points and outcome;
  • Inter-agency meetings: UN Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG), UN Development System Reform, Business Innovations Group, Joint SDG Fund and other strategic consultations: Assist in monitoring developments and discussions around reform including financing of the SDG’s and the Joint SDG fund as required; attend meetings in a support role, take notes, track and intervene upon instructions of the supervisors, report as necessary; keeping track of applications and best practices.
  • Communications, Advocacy, and Monitoring: In support of the WFP team working on the reform, assist in the preparation of briefs, talking points and other presentations on topics related to the reform. Also, support the technical staff on the 2020 Quadrennial comprehensive policy review (QCPR).
  • Knowledge Management: The intern will assist in building and maintaining an internal, online website for all WFP staff on pertinent guidance and other documentation on the UN reform.
  • Research: In consultation and coordination with other colleagues, regularly monitor issues of relevance from the UN Development System Reform to WFP, and advise concerned officers.
  • Other Duties: Carry out any other duties as required and as consistent with his/her abilities.

What qualifications do you need for the UN Development System Reform Internship?

To become a UN Development System Reform Intern, the candidate must meet the following WFP internship requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a Graduate program (Master’s level) or recently graduated from a Graduate program (in Political Science, International Relations, Development Studies or other relevant fields);
  • Further, University course attendance in the past 12 months;
  • Strong interest in multilateralism as well as reform;
  • Possess strong writing skills, solid interpersonal skills, and the ability to work easily in a team environment;
  • Must be fluent in written and oral English; working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset;
  • Also, Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Further, the following qualifications will add benefit to the prospective interns:

  • Desire to learn about WFP’s mission and programs
  • General knowledge of UN system policies and processes;
  • Likewise, an Interest or experience in volunteering or working on the issues of food security and nutrition;
  • Further, an Interest or experience in volunteering or working in developing countries.
