Purpose:

The Assistant Director, Experiential Learning is responsible for the ideation, implementation and overall management of experiential learning opportunities for Johns Hopkins PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows. Also, the purpose of experiential learning initiatives is to provide predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees the resources needed to explore, prepare, experience, network and ultimately be inspired to pursue their life vision. Likewise, the Assistant Director serves as a conduit, connecting PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows to people, organizations and opportunities.

Duties:

  • Liaise with Hire Hopkins employer outreach professionals to identify companies and non-profits to contact about internship opportunities.
  • Also, work closely with university-wide administration to establish and implement internship procedures that are in accordance with the policies of each JHU School, as well as the international office when applicable
  • Work with the General Counsel Office when applicable, e.g. in developing agreements between the internship host organizations and JHU.
  • Moreover, process internship applications and develop/process memoranda of understanding and other required documents
  • Coach interested PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows on resumes, cover letters, and interviewing skills
  • Likewise, manage program costs and implement strategies that promote employer financial investments, grant funding and alumni support that offset institutional cost
  • Monitor internship placements and coach participants on strategies to achieve success
  • Also, evaluate internship placements and implement program modifications when needed. Work with the SOM Office of Assessment and Evaluation when applicable
  • Identify opportunities and strategies to increase participation in internship placements for all Jhu PhD students and postdoctoral fellow
  • Additionally, evaluate by, among other metrics, continually tracking outcomes and impact of internships on participants’ life design. Use all program evaluation to modify and improve program.
  • Engage stakeholders in program direction and outcomes.

Skills:

  • Experience serving diverse populations of students, including international trainees, under-represented minorities and people with disabilities.
  • Also, demonstrated knowledge of career options for PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows
  • Experience providing or overseeing career counseling/coaching/mentoring for higher education students
  • Likewise, demonstrated success developing institutionally effective partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with multiple tiers of diverse stakeholders.
  • Furthermore, excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of best practices for using websites and social media (e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr) to engage trainees and potential employers
  • Also, demonstrated skills as an innovator and relationship builder
  • Similarly, strong service orientation
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Moreover, multi-cultural competency
