Responsibilities:

  • Oversee costume shop staff:
  • Manage deadlines and workflow of productions,
  • In consultation with the cutter/draper, assign construction and alteration tasks to staff members,
  • Assign other work/tasks as needed.
  • Moreover, maintain a clean, organized and safe work environment.
  • Maintain shop and costume production budgets.
  • Also, manage, order, track, and maintain shop materials.
  • Order production specific materials as requested by the costume designer.
  • Likewise, be responsible for tracking and reconciling corporate credit card purchases.
  • Maintain and schedule service on equipment (sewing, iron, dress forms etc).
  • Schedule measurements and fittings for performers.
  • Furthermore, attend production, department, and staff meetings.
  • Meet with costume designers (and faculty mentor, if applicable) to discuss designs, shop schedule, and resources and budget.
  • Meet with the design/tech faculty regarding the mentorship of student designers.
  • Similarly, schedule and attend shop staff designers’ presentations and meet with the costume designers (and faculty mentor, if applicable) as needed.
  • Attend tech rehearsals and take notes for costume designers.
  • Furthermore, coordinate rentals as needed for productions.
  • Pickup/return rental items.
  • In consultation with the Wardrobe, Crafts and Stock Coordinator, organize and oversee the costume strike including, but not limited to, laundry, dry cleaning, restoration, and rental returns.
  • Additionally, stitch and alter costumes as needed.
  • Attend and assist with fittings as needed.
  • Likewise, other duties as assigned.

Skills and Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. BA or BFA in theatre preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ professional experience in relevant costume production and shop management.
  • Also, demonstrated experience with sewing, pattern making, creating, and alteration of stage costumes.
  • Understanding of professional practice in theater costumes, including accurately estimating labor and time needs for specific design proposals.
  • Likewise, excellent diplomacy and problem-solving skills, even in the face of adversity.
  • Proficiency and experience in maintaining and troubleshooting costume equipment.
  • Furthermore, experience serving a varied, diverse population (prospective and current students, faculty, staff, subscribers, and visitors, etc.)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Additionally, ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative to see projects through to completion.
  • Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Willingness to embrace the department’s culture and to be a mentor and teacher to students.
  • Similarly, demonstrated initiative, patience and confidentiality while working in an environment subject to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
  • Organized and self-motivated, able to independently and as part of a collaborative team to manage expectations and competing priorities of multiple constituencies simultaneously.
  • Likewise, successful completion of background checks, including but not limited to education and national criminal background.
