Job Summary

The Spindler lab in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School is a basic science lab doing molecular virology and pathogenesis research. Also, the University are recruiting a highly motivated individual for a full-time lab research position with substantial research and training responsibilities. The lab performs fundamental research in viral pathogenesis of mouse adenovirus type 1.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research in pathogenesis of mouse adenovirus and other viruses. Consult primary literature, design and execute experiments, evaluate results. Coordinate collaborations with other laboratories. Prepare data tables and figures for sharing in the collaborative projects.
  • Moreover, maintain breeding colonies of 3 mouse lines, including husbandry and record-keeping; infect, monitor, and necropsy mice. Similarly, supervise and train research technicians, new graduate students, undergraduates, and postdocs in all laboratory procedures, including cell culture. Also, primary cell preparation, mouse infections and analysis by flow cytometer; virus preparation and plaque assay, RNA, DNA and protein preparations and analysis. Coordinate lab safety training for individuals. Likewise, ensure that documentation of lab inventories and protocols, safety records, hazardous waste, and radioactivity use complies with university and federal regulations. Ensure that work of lab assistants, GSRAs, and entry-level research staff is appropriately conducted and documented.
  • Furthermore, prepare data for oral and written presentations. Present research findings at meetings. Draft primary research articles and review articles. Likewise, participate in preparation of grant proposals. Additionally, evaluate research design, hypotheses, data interpretation, and presentation for grant applications. Recommend alternative approaches to research design.
  • Similarly, oversee/manage 1) ordering of lab supplies, 2) maintenance of lab equipment, 3) disposal of hazardous and radioactive waste, 4) hiring and training of laboratory assistant, 5) effective maintenance of cell culture lines and supplies.

Required Qualifications

B.A./B.S., and MS. in microbiology, biology, biochemistry. Also, genetics plus at least 4 years experience, preferably in molecular virology, microbiology, immunology, or cell biology.

Desired Qualifications

Fundamental knowledge of/experience with mouse breeding, genotyping, infection, necropsy; sterile technique, cell culture, including primary cell preparation and maintenance; virus propagation and assays. Also, molecular techniques including cloning, DNA, RNA, and protein analysis, including immunoblotting; immunological techniques including flow cytometry, cytokine analysis, and fluorescence microscopy. Likewise, CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis of cell lines and mice; excellent interpersonal skills; strong writing and communication skills. Moreover, experience with regulatory compliance and data documentation.
