Description:

Key Function:

  • Conduct legal research and analysis with respect to management evaluation requests submitted by staff members under Chapter XI of the UN Staff Rules.
  • Also, prepare responses for the Deputy Executive Director, Management. Identify and flag the pertinent legal and factual issues and explore options for resolution in order to avoid litigation.
  • Likewise, in consultation with the P-4 Legal Affairs Specialist, liaise with relevant offices and line managers throughout the process.

Qualification

  • Advanced university degree in law (Master’s or Doctorate degree or equivalent) is required. Also, a first-level university degree in law (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent), with two additional years of relevant work experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • Additionally, a minimum of five (5) years’ progressively responsible legal experience is required. Out of the five (5) years, at least one (1) year experience as a litigator at the national or international level, including appearing and leading evidence before a court/tribunal/arbitration panel or equivalent administrative board or body.
  • Likewise, experience in handling employment-law related issues in the United Nations or other similar international organization and familiarity with the applicable rules is desirable. Moreover, experience in handling disciplinary matters in national or international entities is desirable.
  • Knowledge of general principles of law, relevant United Nations Regulations and Rules and applicable jurisprudence.
  • Also, ability to apply legal expertise and sound judgment to a broad array of sensitive legal and administrative issues. Strong analytical skills.
  • Furthermore, ability to instill confidence and trust.
