About:

UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Program, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate and affordable housing for all. It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector, to help build, manage, plan and finance sustainable urban development. UN-Habitat supports New Urban Agenda partners and governments at all levels in formulating and implementing progressive housing sector reforms, policies, programs and legislation which contribute to the creation of inclusive and sustainable cities, and comply with international law relating to the right to adequate housing. It provides expertise to support sound analysis of the housing sector and, in particular, the review of key legislation and elements affecting affordable housing provisions.

Responsibilities

  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Also, assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends of the global housing sector, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
  • Likewise, undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  • Furthermore, prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Additionally, provides substantive support to meetings, conferences, etc. Which includes proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, etc.
  • Also, undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Moreover, participates in field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission reports, etc.

Education

Advanced university degree in urban planning, architecture, social, environmental or political sciences, or other urban development oriented studies with focus on housing issues. Additionally, a first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or program management, administration or related area.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Also, for this position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
