Summary:

This temporary position is located in the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO), in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General (OASG). Also, the position has a dual reporting line to the Deputy of DCO and Chief of Staff of DCO.

Duties:

  • Provide substantive support the overall coordination and liaison work of OASG across Secretariat Departments, specifically the timely delivering of quality briefing and background material in support of UN Principals (SG, DSG, ASG DCO);
  • Likewise, drafts briefing notes, background documents, notes for the file, presentations as well as ensures the timely drafting of speeches and speaking notes for the ASG and other UN senior officials as relevant;
  • Moreover, maintains close contacts and liaises, as appropriate, with staff in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General and senior officials of the UN system, as well as, Permanent Missions and other interlocutors.
  • Undertakes other assignments as requested by the ASG, Deputy Director or Chief of Staff.
  • Additionally, analyzes and interprets responses provided in the numerous projects of the office and identifies problems/issues and draft and prepares conclusions.
  • Also, coordinates activities related to other projects of OASG and prepares related documents/reports.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
  • Also, ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems.
  • Additionally, ability to conduct data collection using various methods.
  • Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases.
  • Likewise, ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities.

Education

Advanced university degree in sustainable development, economics, public policy, public administration, finance. Likewise, natural resources management, engineering, law, social sciences or related field. Also, a first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

5 years progressively responsible experience in development policy advice, political analysis, strategic planning. Also, international relations, peace and security, humanitarian or human rights work or related fields.
