Data Governance in Africa Research Fund 2025 – Up to $10,000

Join the Data Governance in Africa Research Fund to shape data governance and data policies in African countries.

Mozilla Foundation and GIZ African Union, under the Data Governance in Africa Initiative, are funding researchers with $10,000 to conduct empirical studies on the African Union Data Policy Framework. Researchers will also contribute to a regional strategy to share findings with key stakeholders, including policymakers.

Research Focus

Successful applicants will contribute to expanding knowledge on critical aspects of data governance in Africa, including:

  • Implementation of the AU Data Policy Framework.
  • Cross-border data sharing.
  • Data protection legislation.
  • Balancing data utilization and privacy concerns.
  • Addressing contextual and capacity challenges in African countries.

Eligibility for Data Governance

  • Open to African-based researchers with expertise in data governance, policy, or related fields;
  • Demonstrated understanding of African governance challenges and opportunities;
  • Ability to conduct rigorous research and provide actionable policy recommendations.

The criteria for reviewing applications will consider the following:

  • Geographic location and work focus of applicants.
  • Applicant experience in the internet, AI and digital technology sector in Africa.
  • Applicant familiarity with national or regional contexts, clear articulation of the data justice issue.
  • Clearly defined methodology and impact, research plan, and budget.
