The OWSD-Elsevier Foundation calls application from female scientists for the high-profile awards that honor the scientific and career achievements of women from developing countries. Moreover, the award is for early-career women who have made significant contributions in the fields of Engineering and Technology.

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is an international non-profit organization based at the offices of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), in Trieste, Italy, a program unit of UNESCO. Further, OWSD provides research training, career development and networking opportunities for women scientists throughout the developing world at different stages in their careers.

OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards

A panel of judges will select the winner of the OWSD awards, who will receive:

  • A cash prize of USD 5,000.
  • As well as, all-expenses-paid trip to attend the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting, which will take place on 13-16 February 2020 in Seattle.

The 5 awards will be distributed as follows: one for each of the four regions of the developing world. Additionally,  ¨floating” award for an outstanding candidate from any of these regions.

Who is eligible for OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards?

  • The applicant must be a female scientist who has received her PhD within the previous ten years.
  • In addition, the applicant must have lived and worked in one of the following science and technology lagging countries for at least 5 of the last 15 years.
  • Moreover, the scientist must have worked in the fields eligible for the awards.

Eligible Subject Fields

Female Scientists eligible for the OWSD Awards must be working in the subject area including either:

  • Civil engineering
  • Electrical engineering, electronic engineering
  • Telecommunications/information engineering / Software engineering
  • Computer science
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Materials engineering
  • Medical engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Environmental biotechnology
  • Industrial biotechnology
  • Nanotechnology

Selection

A distinguished panel of judges, including members of TWAS, OWSD, and ICTP, and chaired by OWSD, will assess the international scientists in terms of:

  • Scientific merit (eg. quality of publications)
  • International as well as regional impact (eg. invitations to present or chair at meetings; likewise, organization or participation on workshops; Further, collaborations with scientists from other countries; Also, received national or regional awards)
  • Capacity building – local, national and regional (eg. evidence of running MSc or PhD training programs; developing as well as providing resources for students and young researchers; mentoring activities).

Additionally, evidence of innovation will be in favor of the candidates.
