The United Nations calls application for Human Rights Internship in Suva, Fiji. The internship is an unpaid and full-time engagement that provides a framework through which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the work of the United Nations by way of their service within Secretariat entities. Applicants should have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs – which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Responsibilities 

Daily responsibilities of OHCHR Regional Office for the Pacific Human Rights interns will depend on the individual’s background and duties may include but are not limited to assisting the Office to monitor regional developments (i.e. human rights, politics, and conflict) in the Pacific region and, in particular, the candidates at may:

  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of daily news reviews with information on the human rights situation in the region for dissemination at OHCHR headquarters in Geneva.
  • Assist with the documentation and preparation of submissions of cases of human rights violations in the region to OHCHR’s human rights mechanisms, including Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies.
  • Follow-up on recommendations made by the 3rd cycle Universal Periodic Review process.
  • Assist with the organization of workshops and seminars.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining information on the Regional Office’s website.
  • Assist with the organization of workshops and seminars.
  • Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports on the work of the Regional Office.
  • Attend and take notes in meetings/conferences as requested by the Regional Representative; perform other duties as requested by the supervisor, as appropriate.

Requirements 

To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme applicants must, at the time of their submission, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree), preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period from the date of graduation. Basically, English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is necessary.
