The International Rescue Committee invites application for the IRC Clinical Therapy Internship.

The Clinical Therapy Intern provides culturally and linguistically appropriate supportive therapeutic and psychoeducational services utilizing trauma-informed care. The client population served through this program includes refugees, asylees, and asylum seekers, who may be survivors of torture, victims of human trafficking, gender-based violence survivors, victims of domestic violence or other crimes, and those experiencing mental and emotional distress. This population represents numerous nationalities and ethnic backgrounds, many of whom do not speak English. The Psychosocial Support Intern will work as part of the Therapeutic Services team and the Health and Wellness department and coordinate activities with clinical staff, case managers, and other IRC staff. The nature of this work is dynamic and requires some flexibility and willingness to adapt to adverse situations as they arise.

What will the Clinical Therapy Intern do at IRC?

  • Provides support for group counseling or workshops including session planning, preparation, and co-facilitation.
  • Conducts and assists with intakes for groups and appropriate referrals and case management needs.
  • Provides follow up with clients for continued care coordination.
  • Refer clients to community resources or to specialists as necessary and other case management duties.
  • Arrange for interpreters for group sessions where needed.
  • Drive clients using your own vehicle when needed.
  • Make weekly client phone calls to arrange for the group and individual sessions.
  • Complete and maintain required clinical documentation in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to clients’ treatment.
  • Attend individual supervision.
  • Commit to at least 12 hours per week for the duration of the internship.
  • Perform additional job-related duties and responsibilities as requested.
  • Work in both a standard office environment and community-based environment.

  • General principles of assessment and an understanding of symptoms to look for when conducting a thorough bio-psychosocial assessment for psychoeducational support groups/workshops and group counseling.
  • Further, evaluate the effectiveness of intervention(s) provided.
  • Prepare and maintain records required.
  • Also, learn to use individual supervision effectively.

What qualifications do you need for IRC Clinical Therapy Internship?

  • Bachelor’s or master’s level focus on counseling, social work, or education is strongly encouraged but is not a limiting factor for candidates
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the clinical team, clients, and staff.
  • Likewise, experience with vulnerable populations preferred, in particular, psychological trauma due to war, displacement, violence, and persecution.
  • Further, a desire to work with an ethnically diverse international population in innovative ways.
