The Åland Islands Peace Institute is now accepting applications for the Åland Peace Fellowship 2023. The Institute invites researchers in the fields of peace research, international law, political science or other relevant disciplines to apply, with priority to applications relevant to matters of sustainability issues in territorial autonomies, including autonomous islands.

The Peace Fellowship entails a research stay on the Åland Islands. The stay is scheduled in cooperation with the Åland Islands Peace Institute for autumn 2023. The fellowship is expected to last up to two months, as agreed.

The Åland Islands Peace Institute was founded in 1992. It is an independent foundation situated in Mariehamn (Åland). At the Institute we work both practically and with research on peace and conflict issues in a broadly defined manner and from the vantage point of the special status that Åland enjoys under international law. Issues of autonomy, minorities and regional security are among the core areas of work at the Åland Islands Peace Institute.

Benefits from Åland Peace Fellowship

A Peace Fellowship comprises the following benefits:

  • A return ticket (economy) from your place of residence to Mariehamn
  • A monthly stipend of 1200 euro
  • Accommodation in Mariehamn in a single room apartment or guesthouse, alternatively assistance in finding appropriate accommodation
  • Working space and access to our small but specialized library
  • The possibility to present your work at a public seminar• A collegial
    atmosphere and the possibility to discuss your research and ideas with the Institute’s staff and networks
  • The possibility to partake at internal or external seminars and events organised by the Peace Institute as appropriate and agreed
  • The possibility to conduct research through accessing key sources on the Åland Islands
  • The possibility to publish your work as part of our online open-access report series “Report from the Åland Islands Peace Institute” or the “Journal of Autonomy and Security Studies”, www.jass.ax
  • The possibility to attend and/or contribute to a coming E-course “Territorial Autonomy as a Tool for Diversity and Conflict Resolution – Lessons from the Åland Example”.

Eligibility for Åland Peace Fellowship

  • Researchers in the fields of peace research, international law, political science or other relevant disciplines are invited to apply.
  • Priority to applications relevant to matters of sustainability issues in territorial autonomies, including autonomous islands.
  • They welcome applications from all parts of the world, in particular from regions with experiences of issues of territorial autonomy, sustainability and management of natural resources. Applicants from a minority or indigenous background and islands are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants must have concluded studies at master level, as a minimum, and be involved in research work.
  • A good command of either English or Swedish/Scandinavian is a prerequisite for being able to fully benefit from the fellowship.
  • An Åland Peace Fellow is expected to work on a theme relevant to the Institute’s areas of work. Furthermore, a key selection criterion is overlapping research interests and the potential for a mutually beneficial research visit.
  • The ability to combine research and practical societal engagement for peace is considered an asset.

Application of Åland Peace Fellowship

Your application should include:

  • a letter of motivation, including full contact details and an explanation how a stay in the Åland Islands and the Peace Institute could contribute to your work and how you believe you can contribute to the work of the Institute
  • a short outline (max 1.500 words) of the work you intend to undertake as a fellow at the Institute (including topic, relevance and methodology) • a brief CV (max 2 pages)
  • a recent writing sample (e.g. article, report, thesis).
