Through the Fully Funded Women Techmakers Scholars Program, formerly the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship Program, Google is furthering Dr. Anita Borg’s vision of creating gender equality in the tech industry by encouraging women to excel as active participants and leaders in the field.

Dr. Anita Borg (1949–2003) believed that technology affects all aspects of our economic, political, social, and personal lives. A technology rebel with a cause, she fought tirelessly to ensure that technology’s impact would be a positive one. Dr. Anita Borg devoted her adult life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology as well as dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields.

Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.

Google is proud to honor Anita’s memory and support women in technology with the following Women in STEM scholarship programs:

  • Women Techmakers Scholarship for computer science (APAC, EMEA, and NA)
  • Women Techmakers Scholarship for gaming in partnership with Stadia, Google’s all-new gaming platform (EMEA and NA)
  • And, Women Techmakers Irish University Scholarship (Ireland)

Fully Funded Google Women Techmakers Scholars Program

Google Women Techmakers Scholars will each receive $10,000 USD for students in the US while Candian student receives $5,000 CAD. Further, for European, Middle East, and African students, the scholars will each receive a 7,000 EUR or its local equivalent. Scholarships are on the basis of the strength of each candidate’s impact on diversity, demonstrated leadership, and academic background. Besides scholarship, the scholars also will have an opportunity to connect with fellow scholars and Google mentors, while participating in professional and personal development training and workshops through retreat programs.

Community

An online network with fellow Scholars Program participants designed to share resources, support the global community of women in tech, and collaborate on projects to make continued impact.

Eligibility for the Google Women Techmakers Scholars Program

Candidates eligible for the fully funded Google Women Techmakers Scholars Program must:

  • Identify as female
  • Currently, be enrolled at an accredited university for the 2019-2020 academic year (is a full-time student)
  • Further, intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD program at a university. The scholarship is open for students from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the United States, and Canada for the 2020-2021 academic year.
  • Likewise, be studying computer science, computer engineering, informatics or a closely related technical field OR be studying video game programming, game engineering, game design, and development, or a closely related field in gaming
  • Also, demonstrate a good academic record and strong technical skills
  • Exemplify leadership and demonstrate a passion for increasing the involvement of women in computer science

How to apply for the Google Women Techmakers Scholars Program

In order to apply for the Google Women Techmakers Scholars Program, candidates must submit an online application. Moreover, candidates need to provide:

  • General background information (includes contact information and information about your current and intended institutions)
  • Current resume
  • Likewise, academic transcripts from your current and prior institutions (if you have earned a prior degree)
  • Also, one letter of reference from a professor, instructor, adviser or supervisor
  • Responses to five essay questions

Deadline

Candidates must apply for the Fully Funded Google Women Techmakers Scholars Program by December 5, 2019 deadline at 11:59 pm GMT.
