Applications are open for the IWMF Lauren Brown Fellowship 2025. The Lauren Brown Fellowship was created in memory of Lauren Alix Brown, a founding editor at Quartz Media who died in 2019 at the age of 37. As director of special projects, she oversaw some of Quartz’s most ambitious journalism, and championed writing from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.
Lauren advanced an organizational and editorial commitment to gender equality and mentored most of the young journalists who came through Quartz, and many of the veterans as well. Lauren’s practice of digital journalism, as an editor and writer herself, was ahead of its time, and has been deeply influential. Among other things, she identified how the digital forces wracking traditional journalism could be harnessed to expose readers to people whose voices were traditionally overlooked.
The Lauren Brown Fellowship, created by her colleagues, family, friends, and peers, in partnership with the IWMF, aims to extend her impact for many years to come by supporting the work of talented women and nonbinary journalists.
