Cumberland Lodge invites Commonwealth and Chevening Fellows for the fully funded 2019/2020 Emerging International Leaders Retreat Program. The Emerging International Leaders program equips future leaders and opinion-formers with the skills and insight necessary to drive debate, influence policy and build a powerful global network. This program focuses on Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) and responds to the fact that around three-quarters of the world’s population live in countries which restrict such freedoms or fail to protect them.

Over three residential retreats at Cumberland Lodge, fellows will form an in-depth understanding of the importance of FoRB. Further, this will empower the fellows to become an advocate of human rights in your university and home country. This renowned program addresses questions such as:

• Why is freedom of religion or belief important?
• How does freedom of religion or belief intersect with other freedoms?
• What are the successes/failings of existing national and international policies on freedom of religion or belief?
• How can existing human rights frameworks be supplemented, supported and implemented?

Fully Funded Cumberland Lodge Retreat

The fully funded Cumberland Lodge Retreat program covers for the accommodation and meal of the participating delegates. Further, Cumberland Lodge will also cover all reasonable, economy rate travel expenses of the Chevening delegates. However, the delegates should provide all the tickets and receipts of the cost incurred during their travel.

Commonwealth delegates, however, in the first instance, are requested to apply for their scholars’ travel grant to cover the cost of their travel. If this arrangement is not possible, the should contact the Cumberland Lodge for additional support.

Further, the candidates will have the added benefit of:

• Developing communication, advocacy, and intellectual leadership skills
• Working collaboratively and building new networks with peers, senior academics and people in public life
• Joining an international network of FoRB and human rights advocates
• Unique opportunity for intercultural exchange
• Accommodation, all meals, and travel bursary provided for each residential retreat

Eligibility for the Cumberland Lodge Retreat Program

Emerging international leaders are eligible for the Cumberland Lodge Retreat program if they abide by the host’s eligibility criteria;

• The program is only open to students currently studying in the UK on either the Chevening or Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme.
• Delegates should be able to attend all three retreats. However, if they will be unable to attend one or more of the retreats, they are still welcome to apply. Cumberland Lodge will give priority to candidates that can attend all three retreats.
• Moreover, applicants from any postgraduate program, including Masters and PhD students may apply for the Emerging International Leaders Retreat Program

How to apply for the 2019/2020 Cumberland Lodge Retreat Program?

The applicants must download the application form for the Retreat program and fill it. Next, the applicants must email the application to the organizer. Further, the applicants must also answer the questions in the application form to the best of their ability considering the word count limit. Applicants, however, do not need to provide any supplementary material (including CV and Reference letter) along with the application.

If shortlisted, candidates, however, must confirm that they will receive permission from their host university to attend the program.

Deadline

Cumberland Lodge will accept the application for the fully funded 2019/2020 Emerging International Leaders Retreat Program until October 18, 2019. Applications arriving after the deadline are invalid.
